Self-exclusion and breaks: choosing the right level of distance
Not every break from gambling needs to be permanent, and not every problem is solved by a deposit limit. This page explains the options from lightest to strongest — limits, cooling-off, operator self-exclusion and national registers — and how to set them up. The same principles apply at Cardwin and other operators; we have not verified which specific tools Cardwin provides.
The ladder of tools
| Tool | Typical length | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit and loss limits | ongoing | one operator |
| Time-out / cooling-off | a day to a few weeks | one operator |
| Operator self-exclusion | months or longer | one operator |
| National self-exclusion register | as set by national rules | all licensed operators in that country |
| Blocking software | as long as installed | your devices |
How to self-exclude at an operator
- Log in and open account settings or the responsible gambling section.
- Choose self-exclusion and the period.
- Withdraw any remaining balance if the process allows.
- Confirm. Unsubscribe from marketing so promotions stop too.
If the option is hard to find, ask the operator's support in writing to self-exclude you, and keep the confirmation.
Operator-level versus national registers
Excluding yourself at one casino does not stop you from opening an account at another. Some countries run national self-exclusion registers that every licensed operator must check — at sign-up or at each login. Unlicensed sites do not check them, which is one more reason to play only with operators licensed where you live.
Slovak residents
Slovakia runs a central register of excluded persons that covers casinos, gaming halls, betting and licensed online casinos. The application procedure, the address and the rules on removal are explained in Slovak on our page samovylúčenie a RVO.
Extra layers that help
- Blocking software on phone and computer to stop access to gambling sites.
- Bank controls: some banks let you block gambling transactions on your card.
- Talking to someone: Gambling Therapy offers free online support; Gamblers Anonymous runs peer meetings.
After the exclusion ends
Self-exclusion is time to reset, not a countdown. If you plan to return, do it with limits set from day one and a clear budget. If you notice the old patterns returning, use the tools again early.
