Basketball betting: spreads, totals and the overtime question
Basketball is built for spread and totals betting: games are high-scoring, draws do not exist, and the gap between teams can be large. Whether Cardwin offers basketball betting we have not verified; the explanations below are general.
Visit CardwinThe main basketball markets
- Moneyline — pick the winner, usually including overtime.
- Point spread — the favourite gives points, the underdog receives them.
- Totals — combined points over or under a line.
- Quarters and halves — the same markets for part of a game.
- Player props — points, rebounds or assists of an individual, where offered.
Spread examples
| Bet | Final margin | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Favourite -7.5 | wins by 9 | win |
| Favourite -7.5 | wins by 6 | loss |
| Underdog +7.5 | loses by 6 | win |
Half-point lines avoid a push, where the stake is returned on an exact tie with the line.
Overtime
A tied basketball game goes to overtime, so most markets settle including it. That can turn a comfortable under into an over in the final minutes. Markets labelled "regulation time" are the exception. Read the settlement rule before you bet on totals.
Live betting on basketball
With points every few seconds, in-play prices shift almost continuously, and bet acceptance can be delayed or rejected when the price moves. Chasing an early loss with live bets is a common trap. Set a limit on the number of bets per game and keep to it.
League depth and information
Top leagues have deep markets and plenty of data; minor leagues have thinner information and often higher margins. Betting without information is closer to guessing than to analysis. Schedules matter too: back-to-back games, travel and rest days affect performance, and star players are sometimes rested late in a season. Prices react to team news quickly, so information you find after the line has moved is usually already priced in.
