Sports betting: a price, a probability and a margin
Every bet is a price on an uncertain event. Understanding that price — how odds convert to probability, and how much of it is the bookmaker's margin — is the core skill of sports betting. We have not verified whether Cardwin offers a sportsbook; check the operator's menu after logging in. What follows applies to any bookmaker.
Visit CardwinOdds explained
Decimal odds show the total return per unit staked: 2.50 means a €10 bet returns €25 if it wins. Fractional odds show profit relative to stake: 3/2 is the same price. Implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal odds — 2.50 implies 40%.
| Decimal | Fractional | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 1/2 | 66.7% |
| 2.00 | 1/1 (evens) | 50% |
| 4.00 | 3/1 | 25% |
The bookmaker's margin
Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market. For a tennis match priced 1.80 and 2.00, that is 55.6% + 50% = 105.6%. The extra 5.6% is the margin — the bookmaker's built-in edge. Lower-margin markets give better value; obscure leagues and novelty markets usually carry more. Illustrative prices, not Cardwin odds.
Live betting and cash out
Live (in-play) betting lets you bet while the event runs, with odds updating constantly. It is exciting and fast, which is exactly why it is risky: decisions are made in seconds. Cash out offers to settle your bet early. The cash-out amount is calculated with a margin, so using it as a habit costs money; it is a tool for changed circumstances, not a strategy.
Betting bonuses: free bets, odds boosts, insurance
- Free bet — usually returns only the winnings, not the stake.
- Odds boost — improved price on a selected market, often with a maximum stake.
- Acca boost — extra percentage on accumulator winnings; the accumulator's compounded margin still applies.
- Bet insurance — a refund (often as a free bet) if one selection lets you down.
All come with terms such as minimum odds and expiry. The same reading method as for casino bonuses applies; see our bonus guide.
How to place a bet
- Choose the sport, event and market.
- Click the odds to add the selection to the bet slip.
- Enter your stake and check the potential return and bet type.
- Confirm. Read the market rules first — they decide how the bet settles.
Licensing applies to betting too
Sports betting is gambling and is licensed by national regulators in most countries. Check that the sportsbook's licence covers your country and that you meet the minimum age. Slovak residents can find the national rules on the Slovak betting page.
